In some ways there’s really not much else to say about this film. But Laurence Olivier should be commended, and at the 21 st annual Academy Awards he was for his excellent film adaptation of the legendary play.

For those unfamiliar with the play, Hamlet , set in the Kingdom of Denmark, tells the story of Prince Hamlet beseeched by the ghost of his father, King Hamlet, to bring revenge on his uncle, Claudius. Claudius murdered his own brother, claimed the throne and married his deceased brother’s widow.

Olivier had played the Danish prince on the stage twice in 1937, once in London and once actually in Denmark at Elsinore (aka Helsingør) where the play is set.

We are spoiled for choice when it comes to cinematic adaptations of Hamlet . I wish we had time to compare and contrast some of these, or that we had space in the unit for me to require you to watch a second version outside of class. However, I’m glad we managed to make time for a full version. As you may have detected, I have a bit of a crush on David Tennant, but I maintain that the one we watched is an excellent interpretation  of  Hamlet  overall, not only because of his particular charms. I hope those of you who would have preferred Kenneth Branagh’s somewhat more traditional version are not too sore about sitting through this Hamlet in sneakers instead.

If you’re curious, here’s Branagh’s version of “To be or not to be,” and a bit of utter, straight-jacketed madness from Kate Winslet as Ophelia . Then there’s Helena Bonham Carter , who is my favorite for the role. Too bad we can’t combine her and Tennant!

A hamlet is a fish of the genus Hypoplectrus. It is a grouping fish that is found mainly in coral reefs in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, particularly around Florida and the Bahamas.
