Mary was a young girl, who had a good job and lot of friends, her life was perfect, without sorrows and mundane problems. But everything had changed one time, when Mary heard her friends talking about her. They said that it was inappropriate for her to wear childish clothes and she should marry someone. The world of illusions, Mary lived in, was broken and from a happy smiling girl she turned into a mature and serious woman. She even married the man who was older by 20 years, but the thought of being close with him terrified her, and she run away from him.

After that she met Dick, young and a promising (as it seemed then) farmer. It wasn’t love between them, they both understood that they just needed someone for life and it wasn’t the worst variant for both of them. Mary left her job and moved to the farm with her husband. She understood that her life would not be easy because Dick had no money even for the ceilings. So, she began to clean up the house and she did it enthusiastically.

But there was one thing Mary wasn’t prepared to – native servants in her house. She hated natives and was cruel with them, every little fault was punished and in a short time she changed dozens of servants.

No one is to blame for what happened to Mary. She created her own personal hell by her own hands. But this does not mean that she herself is to be blamed. That's life, and hers has turned out rotten. The drinking father, an unhappy mother who inspired her with hatred and disgust for everything male, and now she seemed to be able to escape from this - she was so perfectly alone in the city, happily in her asexual and peaceful world. Well, yes, she would have died a lonely, withered old woman, but she would have been quite happy. She would not be gnawed from the inside by endless discontent, which became a symbol of a married life.

Having heard how her friends mock at her absurd image of a girl at age of 30 and say that Mary is not at all capable of marriage and a "normal" life, she falls into anxieties and doubts. Monstrous injustice is a social opinion that makes us unhappy.

Sometimes it seems that Mary deserves to be pitied and an excuse for all her actions might be found – in her difficult childhood, or in the situations on the farm. Or a slight excuse might be found in the sharp contrast of her bachelor life with her married life. But, unfortunately, even all this can not outweigh the inhuman cruelty, malice and stubbornness that she demonstrated concerning all those around her. No one, a loser husband, or poor in their backwardness, but still - people - the natives, or the benighted neighbors - no one deserved her mercy.
